Before the Event:
Secure management support and attendance
Agree appropriate budget
Plan thoroughly
Choose the right time - ensure it does not clash
with other major company business/visits
Choose the right venue
Choose good exhibitors education and
entertainment mix, audience participation
Have lots of freebies accessories, edibles,
raffle, quiz
Promote well in advance involve family, involve
media photos
Manage on the day
Carry out a thorough review afterwards include
questionnaires and interviews
A Few Ideas to Consider:
Organise a safety quiz related to typical site
safety rules/procedures, offer numerous small prizes, first aid kits, jackets,
home fire alarms, fire blankets etc.
Organise a safety morning or afternoon where
managers, supervisors and safety representatives visit work areas (not their
own) and positively comment on good safety performance and encourage positive
improvement. Also you could give tokens (redeemable against some small prize)
to relevant employees for all positive safety acts/conditions/systems of work
found during the visit.
If you have a workplace with a number of Safety
Representatives get all employees to nominate their Safety Representative of
the year
Get you PPE Suppliers to do presentation to
employees on choosing PPE, correct fitting etc.
Organise some fire extinguisher training
demonstration with your supplier
Run Safety Videos in company canteen
Run a safety suggestion scheme with suggestion
boxes paper pins etc. around the work areas & canteens
Art competition for employee children on a safety
topic
Stage major incident mock exercise with local
emergency services
Local tyre company check all tyres on cars in car
park for defective tyre, maybe even persuade them to give a discount to those
who need new tyres
Organise fitness/cholesterol/blood pressure
assessments for free
Health eating in canteen
Information stand on road safety
Information stand on water safety
Information stand on fire safety at home and at
work include opportunity to acquire smoke alarms, fire blankets, extinguisher
for use in the home - possibly company subsidised
Fall arrest/working at heights training and
awareness
Poster and slogan competition
Publish a safety news letter
Hazard spotting competition
Safety treasure hunt by locating safety
instruction and devices around the site
